2016 has indeed been a good sporting year for us who faithfully follows the games of our varsity teams.
As we end the year, let’s look back at all the green and white teams that came out on top.
Simply Trailblazing – January 28
We start from the other side of Taft Avenue with De La Salle – College of St. Benilde’s magical run to their very first NCAA Women’s Volleyball title. Entering the semi-final stage as the 4th seed, the Lady Blazers survived two knock-out matches to enter the finals and then overcame a thrice-to-beat advantage to beat San Sebastian in 4 games.
Third Time’s a Charm – March 14
For the past two seasons, Ateneo has been the biggest thorn on the side of La Salle’s quest to win their first UAAP Baseball title in 13 years. With both teams meeting in the finals for the third straight year, the Green Batters made sure that the final result will this time be in their favor.
La Salle rallied from a 3-8 deficit to win the title-clinching match 11-9 over their four-peat seeking rivals.
Back on Top – March 19
After failing to defend their title last year, the De La Salle Women’s Chess Team bounced back in Season 78 to clinch their third title in the last four seasons and their sixth overall in the league.
The team pooled 42.5 points to bag the championship.
Redemption Complete – April 30
The De La Salle Lady Spikers reclaim the UAAP Women’s Volleyball title, ending Ateneo’s very short two-year reign.
It was a sweet payback for the team after placing second to the Lady Eagles for two straight seasons.
Overall Champions – September 3
De La Salle was officially awarded the UAAP Season 78 General Championship Trophy, the school’s third in the last four seasons.
First Place Finally – October 21
La Salle wins its first-ever UAAP Poomsae championship.
The team finally claimed the top spot that has eluded them in the first three editions of this tournament by hauling two golds, two silvers and a bronze medal.
Three-Peat – October 25
Despite the graduation of Olympian Ian Lariba, there was no stopping the DLSU Women’s Table Tennis team from grabbing their third-straight UAAP championship.
Mayhem Rules – December 7
The Green Archers lived up to the expectations, winning all but one game this season enroute to their 9th* UAAP Men’s Basketball title.
