Green Archers rally past Red Lions to win FilOil preseason title

The De La Sale Green Archers produced a fourth quarter rally to defeat the San Beda Red Lions, 71-66, and win the 2014 FilOil Fying V Hanes Premier Cup on Sunday evening at The Arena in San Juan.

Almond Vosotros topscored with 18 markers for the guys in green, who were down by eight, 56-48, heading into the final period.

Jason Perkins came up big in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 markers and seven boards, while Jeron Teng came up with 14 points and eight rebounds. Baser Amer, on the other hand, had 23 for San Beda.

After a Thomas Torres triple completed La Salle’s comeback and put the team ahead by one, Amer answered right away with a 3-ball of his own to make the count 59-58.

The Green Archers would again tie the game later on, but felt the wrath of Amer, who produced five quick markers to keep the game on their side. However, a Perkins lay-up and pair of Vosotros free throws later put La Salle up three, 69-66.

With 10 seconds to tie the game, San Beda turned the ball over, handing De La Salle the keys to the game – and the championship.

The Green Archers and Red Lions had 45 rebounds each, but the former had more second chance points, 10-6. La Salle, though, had another mediocre showing from the line, going 14-of-24.

Van Opstal struggled early with foul trouble, but finished with nine markers and seven rebounds. Thomas Torres was the next leading scorer, attaining six points on 2-of-9 shooting.
