Junior Lady Archers Enter WBL Finals

By Louie Razon

De La Salle Zobel entered the Women’s Basketball League Finals, trumping Assumption San Lorenzo in a rough incident-filled game, 70-56. The Junior Lady Archers dropped the hammer from the opening tip and imposed a 6-0 lead, forcing the Assumption coach to call an early timeout. Ignoring the speed bump, DLSZ made it a 12-0 lead on their rivals and the girls in red never recovered from then. Coach Barry Tobias had the luxury of even fielding in 4 rookies at one point in the second quarter as AC had fits all game long in handling the DLSZ press. The starting five of Kat Nunez, Nicole Arguelles, Annette Razon, Angel Caldo and Jamie Roxas all turned in solid games to prevail even with the absence of reliable veteran, Tatj Medina.

The game started getting rough at the end of the second when Assumption’s Eala hit Bernice Morillo with a cheap shot in the back as time ran out. Incidents didn’t end in the third as the Assumption coach was hit with a technical, then DLSZ’s Morillo was hit with an intentional foul. Later in the quarter, in an unusual move, the WBL commissioner actually stopped the game while ball was in play to warn the Assumption crowd for excessive heckling.

The lead was cut down to 12 in the fourth when Eala connected on a 3-pointer but Kat Nunez answered right back with a converted 3-point play. The outcome was put beyond reach with 4 minutes to go when the Junior Lady Archers made a four-point possession when Jamie Roxas scored underneath while being fouled and Nicole Arguelles grabbed the missed free throw and converted also.

The win gave Group B a sweep of the semifinals after Miriam College handily beat Group A runner-up, St. Paul College Pasig. The rematch of DLSZ and their elimination-round tormentors should a humdinger of a game as their first meeting was only decided by a few breaks and 4 points. The one-game Finals will be held at 9:30 on Sunday, December 4, in the Xavier School gym.

The DLSZ girls midgets made it a double over Assumption as they pulled away in the 4th to win by 16. Coach Maan Moreno’s little girls enter the Finals, also against Miriam College, in the pasarelle-format WBL midgets division.
