The Gee Abanilla era officially begins this weekend.
With a new coaching staff and the addition of several standouts from high school, the Green Archers are expected to make significant strides this season with the objective of returning to a position of prominence among college basketball’s elite. The addition of skills coaches and a focus on the basics are expected to yield improvements in the individual performance of the players, resulting in more consistency in the team’s game during the UAAP.
Once a perennial powerhouse in men’s basketball, La Salle’s ability to compete at a high level steadily declined, resulting in three years of futility and frustration. This period of futility even saw the Archers miss the playoffs twice. With all the offseason moves the team made starting late last year, the community is looking forward to a possible major turnaround of the Green Archers’ fortunes in the UAAP.
La Salle will participate in two summer tournaments, the Fil-Oil Flying V Premier Cup and the Father Martin’s Cup. The team will be fielding in a different roster in each tournament. These two tournaments will serve as proving grounds for the aspirants, since no one is assured of a slot on the UAAP roster. Expect all the players to go all out to prove themselves, and get a chance to contribute to the redemption of the Green Archers this coming season.
Brace yourselves, because this season, it will be a whole new ballgame.
