Perkins’ double-double powers Archers over Growling Tigers in FilOil opener

Jason Perkins

The new kid in town suddenly blasted a jolt of energy which gave the team a much needed spark.   Newcomer Jason Perkins punches in a double-double performance with 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Green Archers defeated the UST Growling Tigers, 73-67, earlier to open the 7th FilOil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup.

“I guess we were kind of tight in the first half. We executed very well on both ends on the floor. We were too excited I guess. Again, it’s the pre-season and it gives us a lot of time to make adjustments,” said Coach Gee Abanilla after the game.

After trailing by as much as 51-59 in the final period, the Archers turned on the jets after Perkins scored back-to-back putbacks which gave the team a 64-62 lead at the 3:54 mark.

“He gives energy and I think he (Perkins) is a legitimate scoring option for the team,” added Coach Abanilla.   With the comeback near completion, Jeron Teng finally struck down the Tigers after sinking two freebies in the waning seconds of regulation.

On the other hand, Jeric Teng scored a game-high 31 points, including a perfect 13 out of 13 performance from the charity stripe, while Aljon Mariano chipped in 28 markers.

Up next for the Archers will be the Southwestern University Cobras next Saturday.
