La Salle rode on its strong start to subdue defending champion University of Santo Tomas, 25-20, 25-19, 25-12, and complete a first round sweep Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Spikers put to a halt to the Tigresses’ amazing 18-game winning streak which dates back from last season.
“Pinaghandaan talaga namin ng mabuti ang game and pinag-aralan namin ang mga strikes ng UST pero hindi ko inasahan na matatapos ng ganito kabilis,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.
In what expected to be an epic battle between the two collegiate powerhouses has ended up in a one-sided affair in the match lasted for one hour and 13 minutes.
“Sa height halos equal lang pero ang advantage namin ay mas nag-concentrate kami sa floor defense,” said de Jesus.
The win by the Lady Spikers, who also started 7-0 last year, served as a sweet revenge to their painful setback to the Tigresses in the Season 72 best-of-three finals.
Abigail Maraño scored 13 points, including three blocks, while Stephanie Mercado added 12 points for La Salle.
Despite playing in pain, skipper Aiza Maizo still unloaded 16 points, including the Tigresses’ lone block in the match, while Judy Caballejo added six hits. Michelle Gumabao chipped in 11 markers, including two blocks, while Cha Cruz had nine, including two service aces, for the Lady Archers.
La Salle begins its second round campaign on Sunday against Adamson. The Lady Spikers won in straight sets against the Lady Falcons in the season opener.
Earlier the La Salle Men’s Volleyball team also scored a straight set win over UE 25-17, 25-15 and 25-14. Green Spikers remain at third spot with a 5-2 slate.
