Round-up: Batters lose Game 1 of Baseball finals. Booters finish 4th

Ateneo took advantage of an error-prone De La Salle squad but still needed the 10th inning to thwart a late comeback attempt by its bitter foe for a 10-8 win Friday at the Rizal Memorial ballpark to grab the upperhand in the Finals of the UAAP Season 76 baseball tournament.

The reigning and defending champion moved one win away from retaining its title by fending off a late Green Archers rally in Game One of the best-of-three series.

Ateneo, which finished second behind La Salle at the end of the elimination round, goes for a series sweep when Game Two is played on Tuesday at the same baseball venue.

Game time is at 12 p.m.

A go-ahead goal from graduating Dexter Chio lifted Far Eastern University past La Salle, 2-1, and into the finals of the UAAP season 76 men’s football tournament Thursday.

Chio, the remaining member of the 2010 title squad, slotted in a goal in the 75th minute to give the Tamaraws the lead back and it proved to be enough to carry them to the finals after four years.

After a scoreless first half, the squad’s best scorer Jesus Melliza got things going for FEU with a goal in the 54th minute. But it was a short-lived edge as Carl John Amisola equalized for La Salle in the 60th minute.
FEU then turned to its defense to prevent the Green Booters from scoring anew.
