Round-up: Green Spikers shock NU, Lady Tennisters one win away from title, Latest Gen. Championship tally and other news

Green Spikers

A week after scoring an upset win over powerhouse FEU, the Green Spikers shock league leader NU 25-23 22-25 25-23 25-21 yesterday to boost their final four bid.

They improve to 6-6 while handing NU their 2nd loss of the season. They are a game behind Adamson (7-5) for the fourth spot.

The Green Spikers’ tandem of Reymark Woo and Red Christensen, who combined for 40 points, paved the way as the defending champions Bulldogs absorbed just their second setback in 12 outings.

UST, which will miss the Final Four for the second straight year, pushed Adamson to its limit in the third set with Mark Gil Alfafara leading the way before the Falcons mustered enough strength to squeeze their way out a gruelling exchange.

Adamson and La Salle will meet on Wednesday in a crucial tiff that may well complete the semifinals cast. A win by the Falcons over the Green Spikers will get them into the semis.

But if La Salle wins, it will tie Adamson, which wraps up its elimination round campaign against second-running Ateneo, in fourth place with a lighter opponent left in winless University of the East.
NU, Ateneo and FEU have already secured the three semifinal slots.

UAAP Baseball

DE La Salle defeated Ateneo, 11-10, on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial ballpark in the final elimination round match before both teams face off for the UAAP Season 76 baseball title.

Andre Palacios scored a two-run double in the Green Archers’ six-run second inning before surviving a late charge by the Blue Eagles to close the elimination round with a 9-1 win-loss slate.

La Salle and Ateneo had secured the finals berths before Sunday’s match.

The best-of-three finals begins at 12 p.m. on Friday at the Rizal Memorial ballpark.

The two archrivals will face off for the baseball crown for the very first time ever. The Archers and Eagles never met in the baseball title showdown even during their old NCAA days.

UAAP Football

In men’s football, Iñigo Gonzales scored in the 89th minute as La Salle edged NU, 1-0, at the end of the eliminations to arrange a semifinal duel with top-seeded FEU.

The Green Booters wound up tied with University of Santo Tomas with 17 points, but settled for fourth place after the tiebreak.

The Tigers will take on the No. 2 Maroons, who carved out a 3-1 triumph over Ateneo, which failed to advance to the Final Four after last year’s title romp.

Toting twice-to-beat incentives, the Tamaraws and the Maroons only need to win once to advance to the best-of-three finals.
