Round-Up: Lady Archers prevail in OT. Blazers fall short in OT. DLSZ and LSGH win

Saavedra

The De La Salle University Lady Archers won a pulsating 45-43 overtime win against one of the contenders in the UAAP women’s basketball division, the Adamson Lady Falcons at the Blue Eagle Gym yesterday. Despite managing to score only two points in the second quarter and trailing for most of the second half, the Lady Archers were just gritty and mustered enough strength and composure to turn back the Lady Falcons.

Ara Abaca forced overtime by converting her putback with 1.4 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 37-all. In the extra session, Trisha Piatos gave DLSU the lead at 40-37 with a triple. Joy Cochico of Adamson kept the game close for the Lady Falcons at 40-39. Camille Ramos’ jumper extended La Salle’s lead to three, 42-39 with 2:35 left in overtime. But Adamson racked up four straight points via Analie Tongco’s triple and a free throw split by Janille De Castro to give Adamson a 43-42 lead with 1:24 left in the game.

Camille Ramos once again came up big in overtime, taking advantage of an Adamson turnover to give DLSU the lead, 44-43 with 14.6 seconds to go in overtime. Analie Tongco had the chance to salvage the game for the Lady Falcons when she was awarded two free throws with 5 seconds to go but she missed both attempts. Ara Abaca was fouled with 1.8 seconds to go in overtime. She split her charities arriving at the final score of 45-43. The Lady Archers are still unbeaten in the women’s basketball elimination round with a 3-0 card.

Over at the NCAA, the College of St. Benilde Blazers suffered yet another close-shave defeat, this time against JRU 71-73 in overtime. The team falls to 0-3.

The game had been nip-and-tuck throughout the first two quarters with the Blazers trailing by just 2 at the half. In the third period, the Heavy Bombers went on a 14-2 run in the last 3 minutes to lead by 8.

Down by 14 with 7 minutes left, the Blazers fought its way back to tie the count at 61-all at the end of regulation.

JRU again went on a scoring run to start the extra period to lead by 6. But St Benilde again stormed back to force another deadlock at 71-all with 28 ticks remaining.

However, a couple of lapses in the succeeding plays enabled JRU to retake the lead via the foul line.

Trailing by 2 with less than 5 seconds to go, Benilde had one last chance to either tie or win it but their final attempt from three went hard off the rim.

The Blazers look to finally notch their first win against Letran this Saturday.
