Round-up: Lady Tennisters fall to NU in finals. Green Spikers fail to secure outright semis berth with loss to lowly UE.

Green Spikers

University of the East played spoiler to La Salle’s final four bid with a stunning 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 25-22 first win in the UAAP season 76 men’s volleyball tournament Sunday.

Winless for the first 13 games this season, the Red Warriors played their hearts out on their final assignment and pounced on the error-prone Green Archers.

While UE wanted to wrap up its dismal campaign on a winning note, La Salle badly needed victory to seal a berth in the final four.

Instead, the Green Archers are forced to face Adamson in a playoff game to determine who will complete the semifinals cast.

Ace Mandani led the Red Warriors’ last stand with 13 points while Angelone Soria and Lester Kim Sawal chipped in 11 markers apiece.

Raymark Woo had 16 points for the Green Archers, who gave away 31 points on miscues compared to UE’s 24.

The Lady Tennisters fail to defend their title as they lost to NU 3-2 in Game 3 of the UAAP Women’s Tennis championship last Saturday.

After falling to La Salle in the Finals of their first season in the league last year, NU made sure that they would be able to complete their mission the second time around.

La Salle struck first with two-time MVP Regina Santiago taking the first singles match after Eale Canja was rendered unfit to continue playing with the score at 3-6 6-4. Then, Santiago’s teammate, Marinel Rudas swept Hanna Espinosa 6-0 6-4 in the second singles match.

But, in the third singles match, NU’s Christine Patrimonio overpowered Rachelle de Guzman, 6-4 6-2.

The Lady Bulldogs also took both doubles matches with the tandem of Marie Nagret and Anna Bienes besting Lynette Palasan and Dasha Bautista 6-0 6-2 while Kimberly Uytico and Junnalyn Polito stopped Anne Castillo and Nikkirey Arandia 6-3 6-4.
