Torres’ hot shooting day propels DLSU to FilOil semis

Behind 23 points and seven three-pointers from Thomas Torres, the DLSU Green Archers beat the FEU Tamaraws, 94-89, to advance to the semis of the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup on Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.

Arnold Van Opstal heped out with 16 markers and 12 rebounds, while Jeron Teng and Jason Perkins had 13 points each.

DLSU shot 49% from the field, and had more rebounds that FEU, 45-38. However, the team had 12 turnovers which led to 19 Tamaraw points.

Entering the fourth quarter, La Salle was ahead by nine.

However, the team let FEU produce a fightback, as the Tams took an 87-86 lead following a triple by Mike Tolomia. On the next play, an open Van Opstal retrieved the lead for the guys in green, and the team would put the match away at the free throw line.

Almond Vosotros had 10 points but missed all his five attempts from downtown. Rookie Prince Rivero looked impressive in limited action, scoring six points in 13 minutes.

Coach Juno Sauler went with a different starting lineup in this game, inserting Kib Montalbo and Yutien Andrada. At the end of 12 minutes, La Salle was on top by one, 16-15.

The Green Archers built an eight-point cushion in the second period, but FEU didn’t go away easily, cutting the lead to 49-43 entering halftime.

Torres hit five of his 3s in the third period, which was when La Salle went up by as much as 13.
