Reigning UAAP Men’ s Basketball MVP Ben Mbala is not only looking forward to lead the Green Archers in their title defense next season, he is also ready to showcase his talents in another stage.
Aside from the Green Archers, the 6’7 Cameroonian is set to play for the De La Salle men’s volleyball team this coming UAAP Season 80.
Under UAAP rules, student-athletes are allowed to represent their school in more than one sport in a season for as long as their schedules don’t conflict. We’ve seen cases like this in the past such as former Green Archer Yutien Andrada also participated in the UAAP track and field competition during his freshman year. There was also Ateneo’s Kirk Long who was part of his school’s basketball and baseball teams.
“Basketball is my first love but I also played competitive volleyball back home.” said Mbala. “I’m so excited for next season as I will be playing for both the Green Archers and the Green Spikers”.
Big Ben has in fact been attending the practices of head coach Nes Pamilar’s squad in recent days to already familiarize himself with the system and at the same time bond with his future teammates. “I am thankful to coach (Nes) for allowing me to already practice with the team. It will make the transition much easier”.
With the position of middle blocker, Mbala promises to bring the same intensity, competitive spirit, and Animo to the Green Spikers every game especially on the defensive end.
It’s been 14 years since the men’s volleyball team last won a UAAP title. The acquisition of Mbala is major step in the team’s efforts to put themselves back as championship contenders.
Despite this new development, Ben’s primary focus is still to lead the Green Archers to a back-to-back championships this September.
“Yes, winning another UAAP basketball championship remains my ultimate goal”.
